Sutherland Highland Blended Malt 5YO tasting notes
Sutherland Highland Blended Malt 5YO Thompson Bros 70cl 48.5% ABV
2024 Edition
75.1% Clynelish, 24.9% Dornoch, 0.0089% Brora
500 bottles
Color: golden.
Nose: wax, talc, rubber, ripe bananas, chocolate ice cream, apples, capers, star fruits, lemons, nectarines, herbs, pears, wrapping paper, oranges, black peppercorns, hay, a touch of peat. Really nice!
Taste: honey, lemons, chocolate, nectarines, cinnamon, barley, green bananas, herbs, mandarins, cranberries. Great, despite feeling a bit watery.
Finish: dark chocolate, oranges, pepper, cranberries, cocoa, green bananas, herbs, lemons.
Score: 8 ¾. Better than good. +2+2+1.
Conclusion: Thompson Bros run the tiny Dornoch distillery, which produces just about 12,000 liters of new make a year, as per Ingvar Ronde's Malt Whisky Yearbook 2024. That's only enough to fill around 50 hogsheads. This is a blend of their whisky and local malts representing the terroir around. There is a lot of Clynelish and probably about a dram of old Brora for the whole batch, added from a bottle. The result is fantastic. I don't think I've ever scored a young Highland whisky this high. I haven't tasted a single Dornoch malt yet and would absolutely love to. The 70cl bottle purchased at K&L Wines says "one of 500" on the label, while the Bros claim there were 1,040 bottles. That's a bit of a mystery.
