Kilkerran 8YO OB 70cl 55.6% ABV
Bourbon Cask Matured

Time code 18/11/24

kilkerran-8.jpg

Color: golden.
Nose: wrapping paper, ash, electrical tape, heated rosin, rye bread with caraway, bacon, cherries, apples, peat, tooth powder, engine oil, oatmeal, pine needles, black peppercorns, apricots, a bit of smoke, wet newspaper, lemons, dried herbs. Beautiful.
Taste: oily notes, honey, lychees, red apples, apricots, pepper, peat, lemons, vanilla, medicinal herbs, barberries, chocolate. Starts off sweet, but oh what a lovely acidity follows.
Finish: lemons, orange marmalade, quinces, pears, pepper, dark chocolate, mint, a touch of peat, vanilla, medicinal herbs.
Score: 9. Between good and excellent. +2+2+2.

Conclusion: this Kilkerran is bourbon cask matured, and what a beauty it is. Sometimes it feels just like Springbank. 91/100. I think this is the best Kilkerran out of fourteen I have tried between 2019 and 2025. A truly great Campbeltown malt.

Macduff 15YO Lady of the Glen 5cl 55.2% ABV
Lady of the Glen Tasting Set
Distilled May 20, 2009; bottled October 16, 2024
Matured in a hogshead and finished in a 1st fill ex-Pedro Ximénez Sherry cask for 20 months
Cask no. 4089

IMG_4781-removebg-preview.png

Color: dark gold.
Nose: dates, figs, prunes, sugar-coated cranberries, chocolate gingerbread, eraser, black peppercorns, soy sauce, cherries, nutmeg, orange marmalade, polished wood, brown sugar. A lot of sweet sherry notes, everything else feels muted.
Taste: oranges, grapefruits, honey, dark chocolate, mint, pepper, cocoa, clove, lemons. The citrus variety is impressive, but the sweetness feels a bit much despite the clear acidity present.
Finish: chocolate, honey, mint, pepper, clove, baked apples, lemons.
Score: 8 ¼. Almost good. +1+1+1.

Conclusion: a sweet malt with a not very convincing aroma. Might improve with water, though the 50ml bottle from the Lady of the Glen tasting set was too small to think about any experiments. 83/100. This was only my fifth Macduff tasted, and the scores for all five were wildly different, ranging between 80 and 92.

Distilled July 17, 2008; bottled July 29, 2024
Cask type: Hogshead

96 bottles

3955138_original.png

Color: golden.
Nose: fresh and baked apples, cinnamon, wax, Kurabiye cookies, pears, celery stalk, powdered sugar, clove, meadow herbs, chocolate, heather, hay, allspice, vanilla ice cream, oranges, wrapping paper, tobacco, and even a touch of peat.
Taste: apples, honey, lemons, pears, cinnamon, a hint of pepper, salt, lingonberries, peaches, malt, apricots. Incredibly fruity. Never comes off too sweet, which I absolutely love. Smooth, effortlessly drinkable.
Finish: lemons, honey, salt, chocolate, cinnamon, pears, more pronounced pepper, apples, cranberries. Echoes the palate, though not as convincingly.
Score: 8 ¾. Better than good. +2+2+1.

Conclusion: not sweet at all. Wonderfully drinkable Speyside malt, matured in a bourbon cask that lost 70% of its spirit to evaporation. Wow, I'm impressed. So glad I grabbed one of the last bottles remaining at K&L Wines. I had misread "creamiest" in their description as "sweetest" and almost skipped this malt. 88/100.

Cask type: Sherry Butt

Color: amber.
Nose: smoke, dill, ash, barley, tar, garlic stems, olive oil, watercolor paint, dates, lacquer, burnt rubber, a touch of sulfur, peat, iodine, chocolate, oilcloth, rosin. Restless and a bit chemical. With water: more lacquer, chocolate gingerbread, malt, wet newspaper.
Taste: smoky and spicy, iodine, lemon juice, green apples, pears, peat, salt, chocolate, rubber, lime zest, herbs. Not very smooth. With water: more sweet fruity notes, but still quite harsh.
Finish: pepper, salt, iodine, rubber, peat, smoke, lime zest, baked apples, herbs.
Score: 8 ¼. Almost good. +1+1+1.

Conclusion: a heavy-going malt that begs for water, though the water hardly improves it. Far less interesting than the very recent JWC bottling of almost the same age. No idea what kind of sherry butt DT used but hard to believe it was first-fill. The cask number has ten digits, which is something. 83/100. The $50 price per bottle, though, was great.

Color: golden.
Nose: smoke, roasted nuts, charred twigs, lacquer, seaweed, peat, oatmeal cookies, herbs, lemons, sunflower oil, a touch of burnt rubber. Starts out completely classic!
Taste: sweet and smoky, oily, black peppercorns, green apples, bitter herbs, coal, oak.
Finish: bitter cough syrup, pepper, apples, anise, lemons. Somewhat anesthetic.
Score: 8 ¼. Almost good. +2+1=0.

Conclusion: the re-charred cask here is loud and assertive, it shows up everywhere. But it managed to give the malt neither a moment of peace nor any depth from maturation. Just energy that never settles. 83/100. Who's James Eadie?

Longrow 114° Proof NAS OB 70cl 57% ABV
Batch No.1
Matured for almost 4 years in refill Bourbon casks and over 2 years in refill Pinot Noir casks

Time code 06/01/25

longrow-114.jpg

Color: golden.
Nose: peat, dill, smoke, rosin, iodine, marzipan, paste glue, wild strawberries, oilcloth, wax, barley, damp newspaper, cherries, rubber, wet stone, red currants. With water: more paste glue, sweet pears, ash, kumquat.
Taste: peat, smoke, cherries, strawberries, black pepper, salt, lime zest, red currants, crème brûlée, vanilla. With water: more sweetness, lemons.
Finish: peat, smoke, pepper, salt, hints of rubber, red currants, crème brûlée, lemons, wet cardboard.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a quirky peaty malt. Rather heavy, too much wine and a bit rough overall. Almost 4 years in one cask and over 2 in another likely brings it to only 5 full years, definitely a young spirit. 85/100. In Europe it's bottled as 100° Proof (57.1%), in the US 114° Proof (57%). Interesting for sure. Would I get it again? Probably not, rather would grab another bottle of Springbank 10YO.

The Gauldrons Campbeltown Blended Malt NAS Douglas Laing 75cl 46.2% ABV
Small Batch Bottling No. 02

Time code L 14 01 20
The Gauldrons means "bay of storms"

20211103_110542.jpg

Color: pale yellow.
Nose: apples, eraser, clove, green bananas, chocolate ice cream, barley, lemons, bay leaf, oranges, vanilla, pears, a bit of smoke, cinnamon, wool. Fruity with a touch of funk.
Taste: pears, sweet cherries, vanilla, apples, lemons, honey, chocolate ice cream, pepper, coffee liqueur, and a hint of salt.
Finish: chocolate ice cream, lemons, pears, honey, strawberries, red currants, herbs, cocoa, pepper, and salt.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a nice whisky, especially the aroma. The taste and finish are good but a little weaker and somewhat on the sweeter side. Campbeltown has three distilleries, and there should be at least two of them in the mix. I'd say one is Glen Scotia. 85/100. The most expensive of Douglas Laing's regional blended malts I managed to grab recently, a bottle costs around $60 and is absolutely worth it.

Springbank 15YO OB 70cl 46% ABV
Matured in 100% Sherry casks

Time code 14/11/24

springbank-15.jpg

Color: dark amber.
Nose: sweet cherries, glossy paper, figs, celery stalk, caramel, resin, clove, peat, smoke, lacquer, rubber, prunes, chocolate, mint, iodine, engine oil, tobacco, oranges, a touch of sulphur, damp oak, hay, almonds, pears, papaya, sardines in oil. Complex and funky. I would say it feels a bit oversherried, but it is still very impressive.
Taste: red currants, caramel, peat, orange zest, strawberries, liquorice, lemons, oiliness, a bit of pepper, black tea, cranberries, lychees, clove. Chewy and delicious.
Finish: pears, tea, pepper, salt, mint, green apples, cocoa, peat, chocolate, coffee liqueur. Quite lasting.
Score: 9. Between good and excellent. +2+2+2.

Conclusion: wonderful malt! Last time I tried it was back in 2010, and then my score was lower, as with the 10YO. Did they improve over the years, or am I just trying to justify these days' ridiculously high prices? I really like this 15YO! Speaking of price, £75 per bottle as listed on the distillery's site is not that high. However, this year the lowest I have seen in US retail was $160, with a few offerings at $250. The demand for Springbank is huge, and many people still use their bottles as investment opportunities. Stop doing this, buy and drink now! I do have some minor complaints about the aroma of this malt, and I prefer the recent 10YO in this aspect. Overall, the 15YO feels somewhat on the heavier side, but its taste and aftertaste are awesome. You don't even need extra ABV. 89/100.

Matured in a combination of Bourbon (60%) and Sherry (40%) casks

springbank-10-removebg-preview.png

Color: golden.
Nose: red apples, rubber, honey, peat, pineapples, smoke, ash, dill, sea breeze, chocolate, lacquer, cinnamon roll, star fruit, mango, pears, cocoa, coconuts, engine oil, lemons, herbs, mineral notes. Fruits, including tropical ones, and funkiness, what a beauty!
Taste: creamy, cold tea, apples, pears, chocolate, clove, peat, a touch of pepper, salt, lemons, green olives, melon. An extremely drinkable malt. There is some sweetness, but it never feels cloying.
Finish: ice cream, green olives, pepper, chocolate, salt, apples, pears, lemons, some peat.
Score: 8 ¾. Better than good. +2+2+1.

Conclusion: this entry level malt is really special and truly shines! I have tasted a couple of Springbank ten year old bottlings with different labels before, starting with one around 2008 without notes captured, then in 2010. The new one seems to be the best of them. Springbank is the only Scottish distillery that performs every step of the whisky-making process, from malting the barley to bottling the spirit. It looks like using traditional methods can result in significant batch-to-batch variability. Well, at least this one from late 2024, as per the bottle code, is really good. 87/100. An impressive malt, my 888th tasted overall. Would love to keep a bottle of it in the home bar at all times.

The variety of labels used by the distillery across various releases (including the ten year old) is impressive, and figuring them out is no easy task. I usually consider each new label a distinct malt for statistical purposes.

Time code 23/01/25

sh-f25L4.jpeg

Color: amber with a pinkish tint.
Nose: plums, pine needles, eraser, apricots, damp oak, tobacco, figs, allspice, cinnamon, rose petals, cherries, creamy ice cream, sea breeze, baked apples, almonds, sunflower seeds, honey, strawberries, vanilla, smoke, ash, forest floor. Absolutely stunning, berry-forward and utterly expressive!
Taste: red currants, apples, honey, iodine, chocolate-covered cherries, rhubarb, pepper, strawberries, lemon zest, creamy ice cream. Delicious, yet quite sweet.
Finish: honey, strawberries, pepper, chocolate, fruity chewing gum, creamy ice cream, a touch of rowanberries.
Score: 8 ¾. Better than good. +3+1+1.

Conclusion: what a divine sniffing malt! The port casks used for extended maturation were quite active, bringing a treasure trove of vivid notes. Alas, it is a predictably sweet whisky, and I don't feel the urge to experiment with water at only 46 percent ABV. 88/100. My first non-OB Kilkerran tasted, and just my second indie malt from the Campbeltown region. By the way, Cadenhead's remains the only independent bottler allowed to use the Kilkerran name.

Distilled 2018, bottled 2024

2,500 bottles

Lochlea 6yo.png

Color: dark amber.
Nose: figs, prunes, bread, a touch of rubber, wet grass, lacquered wood, churchkhela, rhubarb, milk chocolate, orange marmalade, baked apples, cherries, hibiscus tea, lemon tart, wet wool, hard candy. Needs plenty of time, but eventually opens up quite impressively.
Taste: cherries, red apples, sage, chocolate, coffee liqueur, honey, cinnamon, cloves, almonds, lemons, some spice, and liquorice.
Finish: lemon zest, grapefruits, cereals, nutmeg, chocolate, cinnamon, apples, pears, cloves, pepper, malt, a hint of salt.
Score: 8 ¾. Better than good. +2+2+1.

Conclusion: this six-year-old malt really hits the mark! There's plenty of good sherry influence, yet it's not overly sweet and remains very drinkable. 87/100, perhaps with a slight stretch, since the aroma does need quite a bit of time to develop. My 10th Lochlea tasted and I'm genuinely impressed with how they've progressed over the past couple of years.

Ardnahoe Infinite Loch NAS OB 70cl 50% ABV

ardnahoe-nas.jpg

Color: golden.
Nose: smoke, damp newspaper, dill, cucumbers, roasted nuts, mint, kurabiye cookies, a bit of lacquer, spruce needles, duct tape, dried squid, lemons, peat, marzipan, seaweed, ash, pears, apples, tar.
Taste: smoky and oily, with salt, lemons, pepper, a lot of honey, apples, pears, seaweed, and grapefruits. Somewhat sweet.
Finish: smoky and oily, with honey, pepper, salt, dark chocolate, herbs, and lemons.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: I like this whisky from the new Ardnahoe distillery, opened in 2019. It hits a lot of great Islay notes despite its obviously young age. I would definitely like to get more of these Ardnahoes. This one feels more like Caol Ila, which is totally fine. No one is going to complain about a new Caol Ila showing up on Islay. But I need to try other bottlings as they become available. 84/100. This is the 115th Scottish distillery whose single malts I've tasted.

P.S. The distillery note says all casks were first-fill, though there is no indication of this on the label or box.

Nose: light smoke, barley, apples, damp newspaper, wax, vanilla, anise, sardines in oil, pine needles, peat, blackcurrants, black peppercorns, burnt wood, vanilla, oilcloth, chocolate, peaches. Great but takes time to open up.
Taste: toffee, a touch of smoke, peat, lemons, milk chocolate, honey, apples, blackcurrants, pepper, salt.
Finish: apples, peaches, chocolate, lemons, salt, peat, pepper, mint. Somewhat hot.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: my first Wolfburn with a strong ABV, and it feels noticeably better than the diluted 10-year-old they released in 2023. A good malt, but they must do better. 85/100. From 2013 until 2022, Wolfburn was the northernmost whisky producer on the Scottish mainland, before that title passed to the curiously named 8 Doors, which has yet to release a 3-year-old spirit. As noted on their website, Wolfburn distillery has no automation and from milling through to bottling everything is done on-site by hand with care and attention.

Color: very pale yellow.
Nose: apples, turkish delight, black peppercorns, gooseberries, soap, a touch of sulphur, boiled potatoes, chocolate, pencil shavings, meadow flowers, hay, vanilla, juniper, herbs.
Taste: apples, vanilla fudge, pears, lemons, licorice, pepper, chocolate, and raspberries.
Finish: raspberries, cranberries, apples, lemons, pepper, chocolate, cinnamon, and licorice.
Score: 8. Between okay and good. =0+1+1.

Conclusion: the aroma is somewhat disappointing, but the taste and finish are quite decent. The sudden appearance of berry notes is a pleasant surprise. Still, this is a rather weak whisky, only marginally better than The Epicurean. 81/100. Timorous Beastie takes its name from Robert Burns' poem To a Mouse and includes single malts from, among others, Glen Garioch, Dalmore, and Glengoyne distilleries.

Nose: creamy toffee, wool, hay, tar, apples, kurabiye cookies, hard candy, herbs, oat cookies, pears, malt, a hint of turpentine.
Taste: apples, chocolate, pears, lemons, cough drops, honey, pepper, a touch of alcohol heat.
Finish: honey, pepper, pears, chocolate, lemons, malt, cereals, mint, light alcohol heat.
Score: 8 ¼. Almost good. +1+1+1.

Conclusion: a clearly recognizable bourbon-style Lochlea at excellent cask strength. Just under a month short of its 4-year mark, this malt was distilled about half a year after the distillery began operations in August 2018. Lochlea has since produced more convincing releases, but this whisky is still quite interesting. 83/100.

Color: amber with a reddish hue.
Nose: cherries, raspberries, strawberries, damp oak cask, plums, heather, nougat, baked apples, honey cake, and cinnamon. Wonderful!
Taste: cherries, rowanberries, strawberry jam, plums, a hint of pepper, oak cask, chocolate, cinnamon, blackcurrants, and mint. Quite smooth.
Finish: chocolate, strawberry jam, pepper, oranges, lemon zest, oak cask, and tobacco.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a rather charming aged Auchentoshan, with a very pleasant aroma, but decidedly on the sweet side, with cloying, compote-like moments. The port cask delivered an abundance of sweet berry notes. It would've been interesting to explore it with water, but the bottle size didn’t permit any experiments. 86/100, my best Auchentoshan to date.

The Epicurean Lowland Blended Malt NAS Douglas Laing 75cl 46.2% ABV
Small Batch Release series
Batch 7

Bottle code L 29 06 17

165601__92824.jpg

Color: straw.
Nose: fennel, hay, bread, rhubarb, wool, rosemary, apples, honey, pears, green bananas, hard candy, lemons, meadow herbs, and a bit of pine needles. Definitely some really interesting notes.
Taste: apples, ripe pears, honey, peaches, pepper, chocolate, mint, lemons, and a bit of salt. Sweet and rather simple.
Finish: honey, wet cardboard, pears, mint, pepper, alcoholic bitterness.
Score: 8. Between okay and good. +1+1=0.

Conclusion: the Epicurean was likely composed of one or more of Glenkinchie, Auchentoshan, and Bladnoch. What else was available in the Lowlands in 2017 for a budget-friendly mix? I would not be entirely surprised if, for example, a few drops came from an old and beautiful Littlemill cask, but even if that were the case, the mature flavors are completely buried under the presence of younger malts. Douglas Laing offers no transparency about the contents, so I'd assume they didn't use anything fancy in reasonable proportions. 79/100. Epicureans prioritize the absence of pain over the pursuit of intense pleasure, so I suppose it's fitting to name this dull whisky after them. It's bland, but there's nothing to really hate about it.

Color: mahogany.
Nose: smoke, burnt wood, sandalwood, sardines in oil, lacquer, tea, garlic stems, ash, iodine, oatmeal cookies, tires, chocolate, nuts, oilcloth, peat, pine sap, dates, tar, green apples, pears, meadow herbs, caramel, cinnamon. Extremely rich! The empty glass reveals some metallic notes.
Taste: smoky and oily, with some iodine, pears, plums, green apples, chocolate, a bit of spice, pomegranate seeds, cherries, lime zest, and salt. Smoky and somewhat sweet, though with very pleasant and refreshing sour waves. The salt shines too. Drinks magnificently!
Finish: oily, smoked fish, salt, cranberries, pepper, iodine, peat, lime zest, herbs, green apples. Somewhat spicy.
Score: 8 ¾. Better than good. +2+2+1.

Conclusion: a very solid heavily peated Bunna. Surprisingly not insanely sweet, despite spending four years in a Pedro Ximénez hogshead. The youth comes through toward the end, but the malt is still quite impressive. 87/100. This is only my third Bunna labeled as Staoisha, and it's absolutely the best of them!

Small Batch series
Matured in Refill Bourbon barrels and finished in American Oak STR casks
Casks no. 283, 284, 285

Lochlea Small Batch ImpEx Overlap.png

Color: rich gold.
Nose: honey, melon, bread, crushed red pepper, quinces, lemon pie, almonds, eraser, dates, cherries, bananas, clay, hay, chocolate, tea, meadow herbs, cucumbers, and a touch of tar. The honey note is absolutely remarkable. I cannot recall it ever being this intense in a whisky.
Taste: chocolate, honey, star fruit, guava, blood oranges, pepper, lemons, apples, and pears. The tropical fruit notes are appealing, but the overall profile is dense and sweet.
Finish: chocolate, cocoa, honey, pepper, pears, oranges, and lemon zest.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a sweet malt. I do not particularly favor this style, but the honey character presented here is just outstanding. The strength feels satisfying as well. There is no indication of cask strength on the label, so perhaps the batch was slightly diluted to yield a rounded ABV. Adding a few drops of water does not change much. 85/100. An interesting Lochlea, one of the best I have tasted. It is reassuring that this new distillery can produce great whisky and that their future looks even more promising.

Third Crop series
Bottled 2024
Matured in 1st Fill Oloroso sherry butts

Color: chestnut.
Nose: dates, figs, rose petals, bread, prunes, meadow herbs, baked apples, nuts, nougat, lacquer, dried apricots, honey, a touch of rubber, peppercorns.
Taste: pears, peaches, honey, a bit of pepper, bread, hard candies, plums, lemons, chocolate, vanilla ice cream.
Finish: pears, peaches, hard candies, dark chocolate, pepper, plums, lemons, herbs.
Score: 8 ¼. Nearly good. +1+1+1.

Conclusion: a sweet and diluted sherry malt. Nothing too bad, but nothing particularly exciting either. Third Crop is the final release in a set of four limited editions, marking the end of Lochlea's Seasonal trilogy. I suppose it is time for them to move on to something else. I tasted the first Sowing, the second Harvest, and for some reason completely missed the Ploughing editions. Overall they were not particularly interesting. In fact, this Fallow edition is the best of the three I have tried, with a moderate score of 82 out of 100.
