Mortlach 2006/2023 tasting notes
Mortlach 17YO Douglas Laing Exclusively for K&L Wines 70cl 56.9% ABV
Old Particular range
Distilled 04.2006, bottled 11.2023
Cask type: Refill hogshead
Cask no: DL18050
269 bottles

Color: pale gold.
Nose: sliced apples, apricots, bread, burnt matchstick, pickles, mandarins, honey-glazed ham, heather, persimmons, vanilla, and a hint of lacquer. Unfolds exceptionally slowly, though eventually, we get there. With water: damp newspaper, boiled potatoes, green tea.
Taste: malt, honey, pepper, toffee, oak, cinnamon, green apples. Sweet and malty. With water: cocoa and dark chocolate.
Finish: pepper, green apples, ginger, lemons, honey, malt, apricots. With water: chocolate.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.
Conclusion: this most likely bourbon-matured whisky needs time in the glass. Its taste improves a bit with water, so on a 100-point scale, the score would be 85 (84 without water). My first Mortlach in almost a decade, and my 850th single malt Scotch whisky overall.
