Ardnahoe Infinite Loch tasting notes

Ardnahoe Infinite Loch NAS OB 70cl 50% ABV
Matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks

Time code 25/01/04

ardnahoe-nas.jpg

Color: golden.
Nose: smoke, damp newspaper, dill, cucumbers, roasted nuts, mint, kurabiye cookies, a bit of lacquer, spruce needles, duct tape, dried squid, lemons, peat, marzipan, seaweed, ash, pears, apples, tar.
Taste: smoky and oily, with salt, lemons, pepper, a lot of honey, apples, pears, seaweed, and grapefruits. Somewhat sweet.
Finish: smoky and oily, with honey, pepper, salt, dark chocolate, herbs, and lemons.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: I like this whisky from the new Ardnahoe distillery, opened in 2019. It hits a lot of great Islay notes despite its obviously young age. I would definitely like to get more of these Ardnahoes. This one feels more like Caol Ila, which is totally fine. No one is going to complain about a new Caol Ila showing up on Islay. But I need to try other bottlings as they become available. 84/100. This is the 115th Scottish distillery whose single malts I've tasted.

P.S. The distillery note says all casks were first-fill, though there is no indication of this on the label or box.

Wolfburn 2015/2024 tasting notes

Wolfburn 9YO OB for ImpEx Beverages Inc 70cl 56.9% ABV
Single Cask Bottling series
Distilled 05.2015, bottled 05.2024
Cask type: ex-Bourbon
Cask no. 2015 # 430

480855-big.jpg

Color: golden.
Nose: light smoke, barley, apples, damp newspaper, wax, vanilla, anise, sardines in oil, pine needles, peat, blackcurrants, black peppercorns, burnt wood, vanilla, oilcloth, chocolate, peaches. Great but takes time to open up.
Taste: toffee, a touch of smoke, peat, lemons, milk chocolate, honey, apples, blackcurrants, pepper, salt.
Finish: apples, peaches, chocolate, lemons, salt, peat, pepper, mint. Somewhat hot.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: my first Wolfburn with a strong ABV, and it feels noticeably better than the diluted 10-year-old they released in 2023. A good malt, but they must do better. 85/100. From 2013 until 2022, Wolfburn was the northernmost whisky producer on the Scottish mainland, before that title passed to the curiously named 8 Doors, which has yet to release a 3-year-old spirit. As noted on their website, Wolfburn distillery has no automation and from milling through to bottling everything is done on-site by hand with care and attention.

Auchentoshan 2007/2024 tasting notes

Auchentoshan 16YO Lady of the Glen 5cl 55.7% ABV
Lady of the Glen Tasting Set
Distilled October 31, 2007; bottled July 2, 2024
Matured in a refill hogshead and finished in a first fill ex-Ruby Port cask for 17 months
Cask no. 4204

IMG_4617-removebg-preview.png

Color: amber with a reddish hue.
Nose: cherries, raspberries, strawberries, damp oak cask, plums, heather, nougat, baked apples, honey cake, and cinnamon. Wonderful!
Taste: cherries, rowanberries, strawberry jam, plums, a hint of pepper, oak cask, chocolate, cinnamon, blackcurrants, and mint. Quite smooth.
Finish: chocolate, strawberry jam, pepper, oranges, lemon zest, oak cask, and tobacco.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a rather charming aged Auchentoshan, with a very pleasant aroma, but decidedly on the sweet side, with cloying, compote-like moments. The port cask delivered an abundance of sweet berry notes. It would've been interesting to explore it with water, but the bottle size didn’t permit any experiments. 86/100, my best Auchentoshan to date.

Lochlea Small Batch tasting notes

Lochlea NAS OB For ImpEx Beverages Inc 70cl 60% ABV
Small Batch series
Matured in Refill Bourbon barrels and finished in American Oak STR casks
Casks no. 283, 284, 285

Lochlea Small Batch ImpEx Overlap.png

Color: rich gold.
Nose: honey, melon, bread, crushed red pepper, quinces, lemon pie, almonds, eraser, dates, cherries, bananas, clay, hay, chocolate, tea, meadow herbs, cucumbers, and a touch of tar. The honey note is absolutely remarkable. I cannot recall it ever being this intense in a whisky.
Taste: chocolate, honey, star fruit, guava, blood oranges, pepper, lemons, apples, and pears. The tropical fruit notes are appealing, but the overall profile is dense and sweet.
Finish: chocolate, cocoa, honey, pepper, pears, oranges, and lemon zest.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a sweet malt. I do not particularly favor this style, but the honey character presented here is just outstanding. The strength feels satisfying as well. There is no indication of cask strength on the label, so perhaps the batch was slightly diluted to yield a rounded ABV. Adding a few drops of water does not change much. 85/100. An interesting Lochlea, one of the best I have tasted. It is reassuring that this new distillery can produce great whisky and that their future looks even more promising.

Edradour 12YO tasting notes

Edradour 12YO OB 70cl 46% ABV
Dougie MacLean's Caledonia selection
Matured in Bourbon casks with an Oloroso finish of 4-5 years

Time code L24/258 06.09.24
3953909_original.jpg
Color: dark brown. Natural, as reported on the label.
Nose: chocolate, plenty of cherries, eraser, fragrant herbs, cocoa, shoe polish, lacquer, vanilla, pine sap, raisins, cinnamon, dates, figs, charcoal, leather, caramel, soy sauce, a touch of sulphur.
Taste: cherries, nuts, dark chocolate, cherry cola, blackcurrants, raspberries, barberry tartness, tea, mint, pepper, salt. Impressive, but a bit watery.
Finish: cherries, chocolate, sweet tea, lemons, pepper, cola, mint, oak, a hint of salt.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a sherry monster with an impressive color and wonderfully pervasive cherry notes. Surprisingly pleasant and not overly sweet, though it leans heavily on the sherry influence. I'm quite satisfied with the taste, not just the aroma. This is the kind of malt you could keep in your bar on a permanent basis. 86/100. My fifth Edradour overall, they are fun.

Isle of Raasay CS tasting notes

Raasay NAS OB 70cl 61.3% ABV

Bottle 3,008 of 8,400 (different number on the stock photo); 1,140 bottles for the US
Bottle code L002183

Isle of Raasay Cask Strength.png
Color: golden.
Nose: rye bread, canola oil, apricots, smoke, peat, cranberries in sugar, ground black pepper, caraway, rosin, ash, tar, maple syrup, blackcurrants, leather, sprats, blueberries, heather. Powerful and intense. With water: varnished wood, chocolate, figs, and the aroma becomes clearer.
Taste: chocolate, blueberries, smoke, peat, olive oil, vanilla-chocolate ice cream, apricots, pepper, mint, salt, rowanberries, a bit of alcohol sharpness. With water: more chocolate, prunes, more sweetness overall.
Finish: smoke, peat, bread, pears, pepper, salt, rowanberries, chocolate, alcohol sharpness. With water: more sweetness.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a solid malt from the Isle of Raasay, a bit more interesting after adding a few drops of water. By the way, finally got around to ordering a Glencairn pipette. This whisky is slightly better than their standard diluted version. 86/100.

Ben Nevis 2019/2024 tasting notes

Ben Nevis 5YO Signatory Vintage 70cl 61.6% ABV
The Un-Chillfiltered Collection
Heavily Peated
Distilled January 22, 2019; bottled June 20, 2024
Cask type: Oloroso Sherry Butt
Cask no: 64

706 bottles

1850454x.jpg
Color: golden.
Nose: peat, smoke, dill, sprats in oil, shoe polish, chalk, celery stalk, nuts, red currants, fresh champignons, rosin, raisins, tea, apricots, limes, grilled pineapple, croissants, wet newspaper, tobacco, mint chewing gum, fruit yogurt, and camphor oil. With water: resin, apples, burnt paper, pears, candies, and engine oil. Really complex aroma.
Taste: smoky and oily, peat, cocoa, dark chocolate, licorice, apricots, oranges, apples, red currants, noticeable pepper, and bitterness. Hot. With water: Lugol's solution, candies, limes, lingonberries, cinnamon, and more pepper. Still quite hot.
Finish: smoke, peat, chocolate, pepper, rowan berries, cocoa, licorice, limes, coffee, and tooth powder.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: in a blind tasting, guessing the distillery would be nearly impossible. A young malt, which is quite evident in the taste and finish, though the nose is almost mesmerizing. Water reveals some amusing nuances, but doesn't improve the overall experience. According to Ingvar Ronde, peated Ben Nevises have 40ppm in the barley. My only second such malt, with the first one tasted way back, at the end of 2011. 86/100.

Glen Scotia 9YO tasting notes

Glen Scotia 9YO OB 75cl 56.2% ABV
Bottled for Campbeltown Malts Festival 2024
Matured in 1st fill Bourbon barrels and finished in Fino Sherry casks for a minimum of 6 months1
Unpeated

Time code L4.024.24 24.01.2024
IMG_2161-removebg-preview.png
Color: golden with a greenish tint.
Nose: yellow apples, sea salt, milk chocolate, hay, figs, wild strawberries, earthy notes, sunflower oil, plums, lemons, wax, nuts, apricot jam, green olives, cinnamon, melons, dried mushrooms, coffee notes, and green tea. Quite delightful, with plenty of nuances and a bit of funk.
Taste: vanilla-chocolate ice cream, lemons, pepper, salted nuts, honey, red currants, pears, and lingonberries. Not overly complex, somewhat sharp but drinks very well.
Finish: a little oily, with notes of limes, chocolate, pepper, mandarins, salted nuts, lingonberries, and licorice. Hot, with a bit of biting edge.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a classic unpeated Campbeltown malt with a notable influence of very dry Fino sherry, even giving the whisky a slightly greenish hue. The aroma is truly impressive! Clearly a young malt, which shows in both the taste and finish. 86/100. My 5th festival Glen Scotia tasted (here are releases from 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023). Campbeltown remains my second love after Islay.

1Someone mentioned it was a vat of two batches, one with a 12-month finish in Fino and another with a 6-month finish.

Yet another Tamdhu Batch Strength tasting notes

Tamdhu Batch Strengh NAS OB 75cl 57.5% ABV
Batch 007
Oloroso Sherry oak casks, with a high proportion of first-fill casks

Bottle code L 12 12 22

IMG_5758-removebg-preview.png
Color: amber.
Nose: quite noticeable sulphur, pencil shavings, oatmeal cookies, cherries, burnt paper, dates, prunes, dried apricots, tobacco, vanilla, roasted nuts, clove, wax, wool, marshmallow, caramel, and pineapples. Well, it's really funky.
Taste: cocoa, chocolate, cherries, apples, pepper, raspberries, lemons, a bit of salt, some wood, and sulphurous notes.
Finish: cocoa, chocolate, chokeberries, pepper, lemons, cherries, honey, mint, and nuttiness.
Score: 8 ¼. Almost good. +1+1+1.

Conclusion: sulphur! Some casks are clearly contaminated. It's not a disaster, but it definitely knocks the score down. The malt itself is quite impressive and powerful; in many ways, it's similar to the previous batch. But those sulphur notes are hard to ignore, so I can only give it an 83/100.

An update from 3/26/2025: one week after opening the bottle, the sulphur notes had diminished. I'm ready to bump the score to 8 ½. +2+1+1.

Tamdhu Batch Strength tasting notes

Tamdhu Batch Strengh NAS OB 75cl 56.8% ABV
Batch 006
Oloroso Sherry oak casks, with a high proportion of first-fill casks

Bottle code L 02 05 22

IMG_5757-removebg-preview.png
Color: amber.
Nose: dates, caramel, ground pepper, rose petals, wax, marzipan, wool, nuts, hay, soy sauce, chocolate, lemon pie, iced tea, quinces, Cointreau liqueur, apricots, tobacco, and vanilla. Very pleasant, with a pronounced sherry influence.
Taste: cocoa, pears, oranges, lemons, apples, pepper, cloves, a hint of salt, and wood. Very clear, not too sweet, but not overly complex.
Finish: chocolate, cocoa, lemon zest, lime, cinnamon, pepper, apricots, and wood.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a pleasant, clearly young, undiluted Tamdhu, and only the fourth malt from this distillery that I've tasted. The quality of the casks is solid, bringing out enjoyable sherry notes in the aroma and cocoa in the taste as well as the aftertaste. It's also great that there's no excessive sweetness. 86/100, with an extra point for taste. Interestingly, the same release in a 70cl bottle, according to Whiskybase, has a completely different code: L 16 08 21. That suggests a 2021 bottling. But if those codes are accurate, does that mean the release for the American market was matured eight and a half months longer? That doesn't seem possible. It was probably just the whisky sitting around in a stainless steel vat before bottling. Still, why so long? Maybe we just shouldn't trust bottle codes in the first place.

Well, I got a bottle for only $50, so perhaps I shouldn't worry too much about the technical details.

Cask type: 1st Fill Bourbon Barrel
Cask no: 306295

Sample

linkwood-removebg-preview.png
Color: light gold.
Nose: pears, quinces, sand cake, grain, burnt match, honey, wax, vanilla, cinnamon, bird cherry blossoms, ash, meadow herbs, tar soap, lemons. Quite detailed, with some interesting burnt notes.
Taste: honey, apples, noticeable pepper, hard candy, cloves, apricots, grapefruits, wood. Hot and sharp, even a bit alcoholic.
Finish: honey, noticeable pepper, grapefruits, chocolate, cocoa, mint, apples.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: an interesting bourbon-style Linkwood, though it feels very young. Water might have helped improve it, but the small 3cl whisky sample I got didn't allow for any experimenting. 84/100.

Meikle Tòir "The Sherry One" 5YO tasting notes

GlenAllachie Meikle Tòir 5YO OB 70cl 48% ABV
The Sherry One series
Spirit phenol content: 35 ppm; used mainland peat from St. Fergus
Matured in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels, followed by Pedro Ximénez & Oloroso Sherry puncheons

Bottled August 25, 2023
Meikle Tòir is pronounced "mee-kuhl tor" and means "big pursuit" in Gaelic
Meikle-Toir-The-Sherry-One__56496.png
Color: deep amber.
Nose: smoke, peat, engine oil, heather, rosin, nectarines, cherries, tobacco, dates, cranberries in sugar, apricots, figs, strawberries, lacquered wood, dried squid, and pencil shavings. Very nice — quite phenolic, with notable sherry influence.
Taste: smoke, peat, mint, pepper, ginger, coffee, ash, lemons, and a hint of salt. Not too complex, yet pleasant and round, still with sufficient strength.
Finish: pears, smoke, peat, coffee liqueur, ash, lemons, dark chocolate, cloves, and pepper.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a pleasant peated and sherried Speyside malt. A bit too young, though quite interesting — would love to see how it matures over, say, ten years. I prefer it over Meikle Tòir The Original, but it doesn't quite reach the level of The Turbo, so here we are: 86/100.

Mortlach 17YO Douglas Laing Exclusively for K&L Wines 70cl 56.9% ABV
Old Particular range
Distilled 04.2006, bottled 11.2023
Cask type: Refill hogshead
Cask no: DL18050

269 bottles

mortlach.jpg
Color: pale gold.
Nose: sliced apples, apricots, bread, burnt matchstick, pickles, mandarins, honey-glazed ham, heather, persimmons, vanilla, and a hint of lacquer. Unfolds exceptionally slowly, though eventually, we get there. With water: damp newspaper, boiled potatoes, green tea.
Taste: malt, honey, pepper, toffee, oak, cinnamon, green apples. Sweet and malty. With water: cocoa and dark chocolate.
Finish: pepper, green apples, ginger, lemons, honey, malt, apricots. With water: chocolate.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: this most likely bourbon-matured whisky needs time in the glass. Its taste improves a bit with water, so on a 100-point scale, the score would be 85 (84 without water). My first Mortlach in almost a decade, and my 850th single malt Scotch whisky overall.

Kilchoman 2014/2024 tasting notes

Kilchoman 9YO OB for ImpEx Beverages Inc 75cl 56.3% ABV
ImpEx Cask Evolution Series 03/2024
Distilled August 20, 2014, bottled July 1, 2024
Cask type: Bourbon barrel
Phenols: 20 ppm
Cask no: 652/2014

217 bottles

kilchoman.jpg
Color: light gold.
Nose: smoke, rubber, chocolate covered nuts, rosin, electrical tape, garlic stem, smoked mackerel, damp newspaper, lemons, peat, dill, ash, rotten wood, camphor oil, pineapples, vanilla, and pomelos. Adding a drop of water brings out more smoked fish, now leaning toward sprats in oil, along with intensified citrus aromas and resinous undertones.
Taste: smoky and oily, with notes of peat, lemons, red currants, honey, pears, pepper, green apples, salt, chocolate, and cranberries. Pleasant and moderately sweet, yet somewhat rough around the edges and lacking depth. With water, the chocolate and bitterness become more pronounced.
Finish: honey, smoke, peat, green apples, lemons, chocolate, pepper, salt, black chokeberries, and subtle oily notes. Some added bitterness with water.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: I struggled to describe this malt for some reason, it took me a long time and too many attempts. According to data from ImpEx Beverages, it contains just 20 ppm of phenols compared to Kilchoman's typical 50 ppm. The peat and smoke are still sufficient, though the taste and finish feel somewhat simplistic. Still, it deserves a bonus point for the taste, bringing overall score to 86/100. But the expression is too expensive. It used to be fair to expect single malt pricing to follow a $10-per-year-of-aging guideline (at least up to a certain age, after which prices really go off the rails), but now we're seeing more and more cases where teenage and younger whisky is priced closer to $20 per year — or sometimes even higher. I’m not signing up for that.

Ardnamurchan AD/Sherry Cask Release tasting notes

Ardnamurchan AD/Sherry Cask Release NAS OB 70cl 50% ABV
Distilled 2018 & 2019, bottled September 3, 2024
A mix of 19 Oloroso butts and 2 Pedro Ximénez butts (8 unpeated and 13 peated)

Bottle 10/1,600 (exclusive to the American market, from a total release of 21,000)

Ardnamurchan Sherry Cask Release.png
Color: mahogany. Absolutely stunning.
Nose: smoke, chocolate-covered nuts, raisins, lacquer, peaches, figs, dates, damp newspaper, soy sauce, caramel, peat, a hint of rubber, tobacco, tea leaves, cherries, and mint. A lot of unmistakably typical sherry notes, yet they take their time to emerge, starting off muted and only unfolding with time.
Taste: cherries, peat, chocolate, cocoa, nuts, pepper, licorice, sea salt, vanilla ice cream, and lemon zest. Not overly sweet, with beautifully balanced salty, maritime accents.
Finish: cherries, peat, honey, more pepper, salted caramel, chocolate, and cocoa.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +1+2+1.

Conclusion: a pleasantly enjoyable malt with well-integrated sherry influence. Keeping the proportion of PX casks to about 10% was a wise choice, ensuring the sweetness doesn't overwhelm the balance. The aroma, however, remains somewhat weak, though I'll still bump the total score up to 86/100. Unfortunately, their usually reliable QR code fell short this time, failing to provide full details on my bottle. The cask data above is based on the European release. This batch is often mistaken for the previous Ardnamurchan sherry edition from 2023, which included slightly more casks but yielded significantly fewer bottles — a direct result of that mix containing smaller hogsheads.

Ardnamurchan AD/10YO tasting notes

Ardnamurchan AD/10YO OB 70cl 50% ABV
10th Anniversary series

Distilled 2014, bottled September 3, 2024
A mix of 58 American standard ex-Bourbon barrels and 2 butts (all unpeated), 32 of which were subsequently finished for over one year in Paul Launois Champagne barriques

Bottle 939/16,746

Ardnamurchan AD 10 Years Old.png
Color: pale gold.
Nose: pineapples, wax, praline candies, vanilla, rye bread, meringue cookies, sweet yellow apples, garlic, lemon pie, unripe bananas, cocoa, grassy notes, melon, hay, and subtle hints of sliced tri-tip steak. Delicately fruity.
Taste: pears, wax, honey, lemons, meringue cookies, chocolate, candies, a touch of pepper, peaches, apricots, and lime. Smooth and well-balanced, though feeling somewhat lightweight. Rather sweet.
Finish: mint candies, honey, pears, more prominent black pepper, lime, caramel, vanilla, chocolate, peaches, and a touch of salt.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a well-crafted and thoroughly enjoyable Ardnamurchan — congratulations on the 10th anniversary! However, the whisky's texture leans a bit too light, and the choice of Champagne (Chardonnay) barriques for finishing feels somewhat odd. I can't help but think that sherry or red wine casks would have added greater depth. I also find myself longing for a touch of peat, as their peated expressions truly shine. That said, Ardnamurchan remains the most exciting new Scottish Highland distillery in my book. 85/100.

Scapa 16YO tasting notes

Scapa 16YO OB 70cl 48% ABV
Small Batch

Bottle code LKPV4453 2024/08/08 14:48

scpob.16yov2.jpg
Color: dark gold.
Nose: heather, clay, rhubarb compote, chocolate-dipped cherries, tar soap, dried apricots, salted caramel, sea breeze, honey, papaya, orange zest, wax, brewed tea, vanilla, and wool. Thick, distinctive, and captivating.
Taste: honey, apples, apple seeds, tangerines, dark chocolate, pepper, salt, cloves, lemons, and peaches. A very drinkable malt, though not overly complex.
Finish: apples, oranges, oak, pepper, salt, lemons, dark chocolate, pears, and almonds.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: the old Scapa 16YO was discontinued in 2015, leaving the distillery’s core range dependent on inferior NAS releases for a while. Now, this Orkney malt makes a welcome return in a gorgeous bottle and with a higher ABV — because, let's be honest, nobody wants 80 proof whisky anymore; that was your grandfather's beverage. Comparing it to my old notes, the new 16YO feels notably different from its predecessor, though my last Scapa tasting happened in 2011. A well-crafted dram, great to have it back. 86/100, I like the saltiness. The Orkney Islands have more to offer than just Highland Park.

Macduff 2013/2024 tasting notes

Macduff 10YO Cadenhead's 75cl 46% ABV
Original Collection series
Distilled 2013, bottled January 22, 2024
Matured in Bourbon and Oloroso casks

456216-big.jpg

Color: dark amber.
Nose: dates, marmalade, polished wood, brown sugar, nuts, blood oranges, freshly ground black pepper, a box of chocolate truffles, green and baked apples, cinnamon, cherry cola, vanilla, marzipan, nougat, and unripe pears.
Taste: oranges, dark chocolate, green apples, mint, pepper, a touch of oiliness, cocoa, cinnamon, almonds, sunflower seeds, and oatmeal cookies. Quite sweet, but not overwhelmingly so.
Finish: dark chocolate, almonds, honey, vanilla ice cream, mint, pepper, baked apples, and cocoa.
Score: 8 ½. Good. +2+1+1.

Conclusion: a Highland malt with plenty of depth and intriguing nuances. The cask influence is well-integrated, balancing sherry and bourbon elements while allowing the malt's character to come through. Gains an extra point for its flavor complexity, though it leans slightly sweeter than my ideal profile. 86/100. Only my third Macduff and the first one since April 30, 2014.
