Julian Lage, just like last year, is playing four concerts at the SFJAZZ Center, each with a different lineup of accompanying musicians. The first night was a solo performance, while on Friday, he was joined by Jorge Roeder on double bass. With Julian on acoustic guitar, the duo delivered an instrumental set filled with magical moments, expressive melodies, and beautifully crafted bass lines. Each composition took unexpected turns, making for a fascinating listening experience. The folk-jazz piece Peru stood out as my favorite, while the standard My Funny Valentine proved to be a true delight. I wouldn't have minded hearing a couple of pieces by Lage on the electric guitar, but the acoustic set was so captivating that it hardly mattered. For the encore, they played the gorgeous tune Call of the Canyon. An impressive performance — slightly outside my comfort zone, but in the best way.

Set list (7:35 PM — 9:02 PM): Double Southpaw, Untold Moons, Peru, Darn That Dream, Ode to Elvin, Hymnal, Something More, My Funny Valentine, Day and Age, Call of the Canyon (encore)
