Caol Ila 2011/2021 tasting notes
Jun. 5th, 2025 05:41 pmCaol Ila 9YO James Eadie for Drinks by the Dram 70cl 57.6% ABV
Distilled December 19, 2011; bottled 2021
Cask type: Re-charred Hogshead
Cask no: 316480
276 bottles
Sample

Color: golden.
Nose: smoke, roasted nuts, charred twigs, lacquer, seaweed, peat, oatmeal cookies, herbs, lemons, sunflower oil, a touch of burnt rubber. Starts out completely classic!
Taste: sweet and smoky, oily, black peppercorns, green apples, bitter herbs, coal, oak.
Finish: bitter cough syrup, pepper, apples, anise, lemons. Somewhat anesthetic.
Score: 8 ¼. Almost good. +2+1=0.
Conclusion: the re-charred cask here is loud and assertive, it shows up everywhere. But it managed to give the malt neither a moment of peace nor any depth from maturation. Just energy that never settles. 83/100. Who's James Eadie?
