"5th & Harrison II" Blended Malt 21YO Compass Box K&L Exclusive 70cl 53.2% ABV
A blend of 11% 24-year-old Caol Ila from a refill American oak hogshead, 60.5% nearly 23-year-old Bowmore from a refill bourbon barrel, and 28.5% at least 21-year-old Glendullan from a first-fill sherry butt
750 bottles
Time code 20 02 25

Color: pale gold.
Nose: pine needles, seaweed salad, lemons, meringue cookies, peat, tobacco, tar, wild garlic, heather, camphor oil, violet flowers, mint, smoke, damp newspaper, orange marmalade, apricots, salted caramel, mango, chalk, tea. Very detailed and delightful. With water: bread, a bit of rubber, hard candy, hay, sugar-coated cranberries.
Taste: sweet apples, pears, dark chocolate, coffee beans, salt, honey, lemons, spice, oak, raspberries. With water: clove, a bit more spice, pineapples.
Finish: lemons, apricots, melons, coffee beans, oak, spice, salted caramel, raspberries. With water: lingering chocolate.
Score: 8 ¾. Better than good. +3+1+1.
Conclusion: a very interesting blended malt, though I am not super excited about its taste and aftertaste. The aroma is gorgeous with a lot of amazing notes. I would say the score is 88/100, mainly driven by the nose. There are two versions of the label, one celebrating the K&L Wines 5th and Harrison store in San Francisco, and the other designed to commemorate the opening of their second SoCal location at the corner of Culver and Sepulveda in Culver City. I went with the SF one of course. It is not a cask strength whisky, although very close as they say. Further details are not provided, though I would assume at least a pair of Bowmore casks was used, as we have 750 × 0.7 × 0.605 = ~318 liters, which is more than one barrel could hold even if the mix is slightly diluted. A sequel to the "5th & Harrison" blended malt released almost 10 years ago.
