Ardnamurchan 2017/2025 tasting notes
Jul. 11th, 2025 03:54 pmArdnamurchan 7YO (?) OB for K&L Wine Merchants 70cl 59.9% ABV
Single Cask series
Distilled 2017; bottled February 26, 2025
Cask type: unpeated first fill American oak ex-Bourbon barrel
Cask no: 75
240 bottles

Color: gold.
Nose: chocolate, oatmeal cookies, pears, tobacco, green apples, cinnamon, clay, black peppercorns, vanilla ice cream, honeysuckle, bread, pickles in brine, apricots, sea breeze, hazelnuts, lemons, ginger, hard candy, cocoa. Really good! With water: wool, wax, more pronounced pears and bread.
Taste: sweet pears, a lot of salt, lemons, honey, mint chocolate, cinnamon, orange marmalade, spice, apples, bready notes. It's sweet, but the salt really strikes and you forget about sweetness instantly. A bit hot, but improves with water, also becoming fruitier.
Finish: apples, spice, salt, pears, lemons, vanilla, cinnamon, mint chocolate.
Score: 8 ¾. Better than good. +2+2+1.
Conclusion: what a delight, the salty notes are awesome! K&L Wines says it's actually an eight year old whisky, distilled February 24th, 2017. This naked malt really shines. It proves they do not need fancy sherry or red wine casks to boost the spirit, as it matures beautifully in a good bourbon barrel. Like the other recently tasted Ardnamurchans, it benefits from a few drops of water, which bring extra balance. 88/100. My 9th Murchan, the best so far.
