David Nelson's birthday bash at HopMonk! The last original New Rider remaining alive turned 82. He can barely walk, needing assistance all the time, but his spirit seems to be high. David opened the night with Banana on second guitar, playing a short acoustic set of old-time bluegrass and folk tunes. Nelson sounded somewhat weak, though all the songs performed were quite touching.

Banana left the stage and the band came in, featuring Mookie Siegel on keys, Barry Sless on guitar and pedal steel, Pete Sears on bass, Wally Ingram on percussion and drums, and Jay Lane on drums. The first DNB set was a bit pedestrian. I liked Mookie singing George Harrison's Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth). Things became more and more interesting toward the end of the set, the closing sequence had a lot of tasty improvisations, and Dylan's Wicked Messenger sounded fantastic.

Before the start of the last set, KC Turner advertised some of his upcoming shows at HopMonk Novato, telling the crowd that the 8/1 Stu Allen & Mars Hotel gig will be way better than the concert scheduled to happen at Golden Gate Park that same day. Then he had to say "sorry Jay" and that was funny.

The second DNB set was really good! It opened with lovely Deep Elem Blues and flowed into a rollicking Man Overboard. Suite at the Mission was amazing. The closing sequence Born a Dreamer > Rainmaker > Drums > Kick in the Head lasted for how long, forty five minutes? The band played tight, and David sang with confidence. That was impressive.

I hope we'll see many more of David's birthday bashes at HopMonk Novato. He's not getting better, but can still sit in for a really good show.

Вторым драммером этим вечером заявлен Джей Лэйн (Primus, RatDog, Golden Gate Wingmen, Dead & Company)! Дэвид весь концерт с электрической гитарой, открывают кавером Rocky Road Blues Билла Монро, в первом сете сыграли по три вещи NRPS и DNB, исключительно здорово вышла Movin' Right Along, Пит Сирз спел Come Away. Досталась грейтфул-дедовская Friend of the Devil, Муки Сигел исполнил джордж-харрисоновскую All Things Must Pass, а завершился сет дилановской The Wicked Messenger. Второе отделение получилось более импровизационным, восемь вещей играли аж полтора часа! Начали лос-лобосовской Let's Say Goodnight, далее особенно запомнились привязчивая Suite at the Mission с инструменталом Coconut Wireless, включающим продолжительные барабанные соло, исполнили и вэн-моррисоновскую Into the Mystic. Вернулись на бис, Дэвид долго искал в своей толстенной папке тексты, сделали в итоге дедовскую The Wheel, вау! Отличный долгий концерт.

Восемьдесят лет только что стукнуло лидеру New Riders of the Purple Sage! По этому поводу сделали концерт в местном Хопмонке, билеты на него в итоге все распродались. Представляет виновника торжества грейтфул-дедовский роуди Биг Стив Пэриш, отметив, что вообще-то это чудо, что Нельсон всё ещё жив, он один остался из оригинальных райдеров. В составе DNB очень хорошо знакомые Джон Моло, Пит Сирз и Барри Слесс, а также драммер-перкуссионист Уолли Ингрэм с клавишником Муки Сигелом. Открывают в акустическом формате, известнейшей жутковатой народной темой Oh the Wind and Rain (The Two Sisters)¹, продолжают элизабет-коттеновской Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie, Муки играет на аккордеоне, отлично! И тут же следует цепочка из двух дедовских вещей, Friend of the Devil > Ripple. Переключаются на электричество, исполняют целую подборку хитов NRPS! Все классные, особенно впечатлила двадцатиминутная импровизационно-психоделическая Dirty Business, Пит на басу вытворяет чудеса! Почти полтора часа продолжался первый сет, ну надо же! Второе отделение открывается дилановской On a Night Like This с лид-вокалом Сигела, а позже он спел и зе-бэндовскую Twilight. Звучит много незнакомых мне вещей Дэвида последних лет, весьма симпатичных, вскрытие показало, что некоторые из них написаны на слова самого Роберта Хантера (раз, два, три, четыре)! Хватает импровизации, тема Different World ощутилась переходным звеном между Estimated Prophet и Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo. Завершился сет продолжительностью более полутора часов народной Duncan and Brady и стоунзовской Dead Flowers, ура! Вот так восьмидесятилетний дедушка, водят его под руки, но, усевшись, он способен на многое. Фантастический концерт!

Дэвид Нельсон и Банана с акустическим концертом в местном Севастополе. Ходит с трудом основатель New Riders of the Purple Sage, но, усевшись, поёт и играет на гитаре очень даже уверенно. Вид у него забавный, тай-дай и треники. Банана начинает на банджо, но не забывает и про свою фирменную 5-струнную гитару. В программе полно старого доброго блюграсса и прочего фолка! В первом сете особенно классно прозвучала Diamond Joe Текса Логана, а от Кукушки с долгим вступлением на банджо совсем унесло. Грустная The Little Girl and the Dreadful Snake Билла Монро, что ж, прямо-таки историю блюграсса можно изучать по концерту. Достались хитовые янгбладзовская Hippie from Olema No. 5 и нью-райдерзовская Panama Red, очень хорошо! Завершает более чем часовой первый сет Freight Train Boogie Делмор Бразерс, это ведь практически рок-н-ролл. Классная подборка песен, неужели будет продолжение? Да, но второе отделение получилось коротким, не рассчитали сил и времени, похоже, сыграв всего половину из запланированного списка композиций. Запомнилась Two Soldiers, знакомая по дилановскому альбому World Gone Wrong (1993), хорошо вышла NRPS-овская Last Lonely Eagle, очень убедительно исполнили и дедовскую Ripple, best song ever written по словам Дэвида! Классный концерт старой акустической музыки, очень рад, что наконец-то увидел Нельсона живьём, всё-таки почти восемьдесят лет ему.
