Puntiagudo Barril Mezcal tasting notes
Jun. 2nd, 2025 03:52 pmPuntiagudo Barril Mario Acevedo Mezcal Joven 75cl 50% ABV
Santa Maria Velató, Oaxaca, Mexico
Batch MA-BAR-01
Distilled 05/07/2024

Color: crystal clear.
Nose: tar, rubber, lime zest, meadow herbs, a wisp of smoke, cumin, bacon, glossy paper, wet granite, wool, electrical tape, black pepper, papaya, bay leaves, roasted asparagus, manure-rich earth.
Taste: lemon juice, limes, tar, pepper, a pinch of salt, very light smoky notes, boozy bitterness and sugary sweetness.
Finish: loads of pepper, limes, lemons, salt, sugar, bitterness, rubber. Hot and heavy.
Score: 9. Between good and excellent. +3+2+1.
Conclusion: not a particularly smoky mezcal, though still notably phenolic. The nose is wonderful, packed with varied and vivid notes, while the citrus truly shines in the taste. Still, the whole thing feels quite unbalanced, and that starts right on the palate, becoming even more obvious in the aftertaste. The acidity is glorious, but the steady score drop from nose to finish is hard to ignore. 815 kgs of Karwinskii (Barril) agave yielded only 21 liters of liquid. A copper pot was used, so this mezcal is classified as artisanal. 89/100, with the nose getting most of the points.
