John Craigie had just recently performed a Beatles set at HopMonk's Session Room and was now back for an outdoor show with the Coffis Brothers. The latter opened the night, kicking things off with a great version of their song Ramona. They played a few tracks from the recent album Kaw-Fis Bruth-Urs, including the rocking Mitsubishi and the irresistibly catchy Do You Want To. The band also threw in a new rollicking tune Rodeo and one cover, Simon and Garfunkel's Keep the Customer Satisfied. Solid opening!
After about a half-hour break, the Coffis Brothers returned to back up John Craigie. They brought a strong roots rock sound to his songs, and the funky electric bass stood out as something really special. The first two tunes were outstanding, especially my favorite Part Wolf. More great songs followed, of course. John delivered his signature I Wrote Mr. Tambourine Man solo, and they closed the set with a cover of Don Henley's The Boys of Summer. The encore featured I Am California, naturally. Great show! Really liked how Craigie sounded with this band. His stories were good as always.
