The evening started with a set by Ashleigh Flynn & the Riveters, an all-female band from Portland, OR. I've seen them before, they had already warmed up the stage before the Mother Hips show at the Great American in December 2023. Once again their program featured country and roots rock songs with a touch of punk, this time they played a bunch of solid tunes from the new album titled Good Morning, Sunshine. The sound was good, though I'd say two electric guitars combined with a loud bass were a bit too much from time to time. The band closed the set with Tom Petty's American Girl, awesome!
After the intermission Mother Hips took the stage, opening with Clean Me Up. "We don't have much but what we have is whiskey." Their nearly two hour set included lots of hits, including We Want What We Want, Esmerelda, and White Falcon Fuzz. Magazine was, as usual, long and psychedelic. Also we got a rare Creation Smiles from the album Behind Beyond (2013), which Tim sang from a lyric sheet. No more big surprises, just great songs, wonderful guitar interplay, solid vocals, everything expected from a great concert by the MH!
That was my 16th Hips' show.
